Summary

Whether or not you believe in fate, or luck, or love at first sight, every romance has to start somewhere。 MEET CUTE is an anthology of original short stories featuring tales of "how they first met" from some of today’s most popular YA authors。

Readers will experience Nina LaCour's beautifully written piece about two Bay Area girls meeting via a cranky customer service Tweet, Sara Shepard's glossy tale about a magazine intern and a young rock star, Nicola Yoon's imaginative take on break-ups and make-ups, Katie Cotugno's story of two teens hiding out from the police at a house party, and Huntley Fitzpatrick's charming love story that begins over iced teas at a diner。 There’s futuristic flirting from Kass Morgan and Katharine McGee, a riveting transgender heroine from Meredith Russo, a subway missed connection moment from Jocelyn Davies, and a girl determined to get out of her small town from Ibi Zoboi。 Jennifer Armentrout writes a sweet story about finding love from a missing library book, Emery Lord has a heartwarming and funny tale of two girls stuck in an airport, Dhonielle Clayton takes a thoughtful, speculate approach to pre-destined love, and Julie Murphy dreams up a fun twist on reality dating show contestants。

This incredibly talented group of authors brings us a collection of stories that are at turns romantic and witty, epic and everyday, heartbreaking and real。

It took me a bit to get into the stories, there were a few at the beginning that didn't really hit the "cute" part of the phrase "meet cute" in my opinion。 But as I got going, so many of the later stories won me over。 A few of the stories were done in second person, which isn't really my thing。 For instance, the Imagines’ book, I couldn't get that far in。 I have to admit though, the first book that left me grinning like an idiot was Armentrout's story。 And, of course it had to do with a library。 It took me a bit to get into the stories, there were a few at the beginning that didn't really hit the "cute" part of the phrase "meet cute" in my opinion。 But as I got going, so many of the later stories won me over。 A few of the stories were done in second person, which isn't really my thing。 For instance, the Imagines’ book, I couldn't get that far in。 I have to admit though, the first book that left me grinning like an idiot was Armentrout's story。 And, of course it had to do with a library。。 in my opinion, that was totally a "meet cute"。 Then, I also loved the story that took place on a subway, seeing the perfect guy on the subway train that was crossing the opposite way, and then having the girl use it as a project for her statistics class。。 So, even though a few of the stories were not my cup of tea, all of them were quite very well written。 All in all, quite a good read。 。。。more

I love the concept of this book but after reading the 1st story, its strictly just the Meet Cute moment and no info on their resolution。 I was really invested with the people in 1st story and I wish I knew what happened。 I'm sure the other meet cute stories are just as appealing but I didnt want to get invested in their stories since it's such a short snapshot of their lives and I want to know it all worked out。。。 I love the concept of this book but after reading the 1st story, its strictly just the Meet Cute moment and no info on their resolution。 I was really invested with the people in 1st story and I wish I knew what happened。 I'm sure the other meet cute stories are just as appealing but I didnt want to get invested in their stories since it's such a short snapshot of their lives and I want to know it all worked out。。。 。。。more

Like most anthologies, this one is a mixed bag; this one had the added disadvantage of being very much not my genre。 However: I thoroughly enjoyed most of these small stories of young love, and was astonished at how much mileage and variety these authors were able to wring out of telling stories just about the moment two people meet for the first time。 Here are the stories in order, and my thoughts on them:1。 "Siege Etiquette" - a strong start, and probably the best story of the bunch。 One of th Like most anthologies, this one is a mixed bag; this one had the added disadvantage of being very much not my genre。 However: I thoroughly enjoyed most of these small stories of young love, and was astonished at how much mileage and variety these authors were able to wring out of telling stories just about the moment two people meet for the first time。 Here are the stories in order, and my thoughts on them:1。 "Siege Etiquette" - a strong start, and probably the best story of the bunch。 One of the best stories written in the second person I've ever read。 Poor Wolf, he seems like he's had a tough life。 2。 "Print Shop" - still a good little tale, though a bit twee for my taste。 This might be why I'm not such a huge fan of the "meet cute" trope in general, sometimes it can come off manufactured。 3。 "Hourglass" - a good story about female friendship; not sure what it's doing in this story though。 The "meet cute" doesn't happen until the very end, and it doesn't draw focus。 Still nice though。 4。 "Click" - stories about high-tech matching services are almost their own genre。 This one stands out by exploring just what sort of person might sign up for a service like this。 Fun stuff。 5。 "The Intern" - a fine concept let down by slightly sub-standard writing。 The Phineas character came off as unrealistic - but maybe that's the point。 6。 "Somewhere That's Green" - DNF。 7。 "The Way We Love Here" - like "Click," this one plays with a familiar trope, and uses its fantasy element to great effect。 One of the best in the volume。 8。 "Oomph" - a heart-flutterer, but with good character work as well。 High marks。 9。 "The Dictionary of You and Me" - more of a standard "meet cute" story here。 Strong writing but not exactly a highlight。10。 "The Unlikely Likelihood of Falling in Love" - one for you math nuts and statisticians out there。 Does a lot with its concept; great fun。 11。 "Million Miles" - a heartbreaking story。 Reader, I cried in my car。 12。 "Something Real" - surprised that this was the first mention of a dating game in this volume。 Still, a fun twist。 Very sympathetic character work。 13。 "Say Anything" - feels like a missed opportunity to become a horror story, or at least a stalker-thriller。 Fun, but maybe not in the way intended。14。 "The Department of Dead Love" - a great and sweet sci-fi tale that borrows a bit from MINORITY REPORT, harmed only by my not knowing how old the narrator was。 BEST: "Siege Etiquette" and "Click" and "Million Miles" and "Dept。 of Dead Love。"3。5 stars。 。。。more

This book was by a bunch of different authors that all wrote short, love stories on how two characters meet。 I actually really liked this book。 There wasn't a single story that was actually bad。 I would totally recommend this book to someone who loves romance books but doesn't actually want to read an entire book on just 2 people。 This book was by a bunch of different authors that all wrote short, love stories on how two characters meet。 I actually really liked this book。 There wasn't a single story that was actually bad。 I would totally recommend this book to someone who loves romance books but doesn't actually want to read an entire book on just 2 people。 。。。more

The 'meet cute' is my favorite part of a rom-com, maybe even more than the HEA。 So this anthology of 'meet cute' short stories was right up my alley。As with most anthologies, the quality is uneven。 A few of the stories were a little too obvious or odd (but not in a good way) or a bit boring。 But many were fun and sweet。 My favorites were Click and Oomph。 I also liked Hourglass but the ending was much too abrupt。 The 'meet cute' is my favorite part of a rom-com, maybe even more than the HEA。 So this anthology of 'meet cute' short stories was right up my alley。As with most anthologies, the quality is uneven。 A few of the stories were a little too obvious or odd (but not in a good way) or a bit boring。 But many were fun and sweet。 My favorites were Click and Oomph。 I also liked Hourglass but the ending was much too abrupt。 。。。more

this book is absolutely adorable。 i found it at my local library and actually ended up purchasing my own copy。 some of the stories weren't really my taste imo, but there were a few gems in here that really made this a 5/5 stars。 i'll give my honest opinion of each little short story!! i'll try to refrain from spoilers。 if i spoil something i'll put a warning。 ok so first of all。 the cover art。 lol 5/5。 in all honesty the cover of this book was what drew me in - it looked EXACTLY like something i this book is absolutely adorable。 i found it at my local library and actually ended up purchasing my own copy。 some of the stories weren't really my taste imo, but there were a few gems in here that really made this a 5/5 stars。 i'll give my honest opinion of each little short story!! i'll try to refrain from spoilers。 if i spoil something i'll put a warning。 ok so first of all。 the cover art。 lol 5/5。 in all honesty the cover of this book was what drew me in - it looked EXACTLY like something i would enjoy。。。and it was。 1。 siege etiquette 3/5 // pretty good start to the book!! kinda reminded me of a fanfiction ahaha but i really did enjoy it since i am a sucker for fanfiction (; uhm anyways the main character *mini spoiler* does kinda sorta cheat on her boyfriend which is - something - but there IS a plot twist that made me go "aAAAHHHH" so overall it was a good start to the book。 2。 print shop 4/5 // i thought this one was adorable!! extremely adorable!! i could just envision EVERYTHING in my head。 all the characters were lovable and i loved how the conversations seemed so real。 super cute。 3。 hourglass 3。5/5 // this one was good。 sometimes it got a little bit confusing, but overall i liked it。 i was a bit torn on the ending, because on one hand, i thought it was the most realistic out of all the stories - because, let's face it, meet cutes don't happen every other day。 on the other hand, this is literally a book titled "meet cute。" the stories are supposed to be about meet cutes。 anyways, i decided that i liked the ending lol - the more i read it the more i liked it。 also stan dolores i loved her character arc D; 4。 click 3。5/5 // pretty cute。 the ending was expected but also unexpected。 the couple was a cute one。 this is a short review because i don't have much to say about this one, but the bottom line: i enjoyed it。 5。 the intern 3。5/5 // i mean- it was good。 i thought the dialogue was especially great。 the only thing that turns me off is the fact that there is SO MUCH DEATH in already SO MANY of these short stories。 like this is the fifth short story and 3/5 of them mention a family member passing away。 i mean, yeah, i get it, death happens, and it is very obviously traumatic and an awful thing to have to experience, but when you see it so many times。。。it can get a little repetitive。 this is not the author's faults whatsoever - unless they had some mysterious group chat where they all said that they would be writing about death, i don't blame them。 6。 somewhere that's green 2/5 // i want to like this one。 i really do。 i want to like this one SO much, and there are aspects of it that i do like *spoiler* (like when she said that she looked like the model and they kissed oKAY THAT PART WAS SO CUTE) but my main critique is that this is supposed to be a SHORT story。 from the looks of the formatting, there were literally chapters in the SHORT story。 there were a lot of characters, and the pov kept switching, and the writing style just didn't cater to me personally。 it's a great writing style, just not my thing。 also i feel like a lot of people are saying the main character is annoying。 personally, i do not agree。 she is going through so much, she has every single right to be frustrated。 7。 the way we love here 1/5 // i'm really sorry but i did not like this one at all。 it was really confusing but in all honestly i think i'm a little biased because originally i thought it was a guy x guy and when i saw it wasn't i got a little mad aaahaha。 8。 oomph 5/5 // okay absolutely stunning。 so so so so SO cute。 i adored the ending and the dialogue ESPECIALLY was so realistic (you know, for a cliché love story), and SO cute。 i can literally envision the two main characters。 overall, one of my favourites!! 9。 the dictionary of you and me 5/5 // i've seen a lot of people dislike this one。 personally, i think it was my absolute favourite! (or second favourite。 oomph takes the cake。) i will admit, it was kinda unrealistic。 but i think i like it so much because i really want this to happen to me in real life pls aaahahahah- 10。 the unlikeli liklihood of falling in love 5/5 // super duper cute。 i know i'm saying the word "cute" so much but this book is literally called "meet-cute" so what did you expect。 ANYWAYS the main character is really likeable and the ending is super cute。 i also loved the dynamic between the main character and her math teacher/math class and how they all hyped her up。 this was one of the stories i would have loved as a full book, however i ALSO love how this didn't feel like the author was cramming everything into one chapter。 the pacing was good imo。 11。 249 million miles 1/5 // what。 what?? okay get ready for a rant on this one。 apologies to the author, this is in no way a jab to them, but this was my least favourite out of all the short stories。 what the actual heck was this。 FIRST OF ALL, the love interest is a manic pixie dream girl。 NO DOUBT ABOUT THAT。 and of course that's FINE but it's like so OBVIOUS and idk i just feel like the main character is kinda dry。 SECOND OF ALL, i am pretty positive that a video of some kid getting rejected to prom wouldn't go viral across the entire world。 i mean, a MURAL of this kid?? DUDE, even the GREATEST FREAKING MEMES OF ALL TIME DON'T HAVE MURALS AT PRINCETON!!!! also when they're *spoiler* in the simulation together for 24 hours, the timeline was just kinda confusing。 like, they get in the room, talk for a little while, there's that false alarm thing, they reveal their dramatic backstories, they dance, and then they like- pass out?? and sleep for the remainder of the simulation????????? how does that even-????? anyways, the thing about this that irks me the most is the ENDING。 the love interest leaves a youtube comment on the main character's youtube video and i'm SORRY but it is just SO MANIC PIXIE DREAM GIRL and THEN he like goes live and- okay, i'm sorry, i can't go on any longer。 12。 something real 5/5 // another one of my personal favourites!! i've seen many people say that the romance could be seen from a mile away, but in all honesty (and maybe i'm just dumb) i didn't catch on until a few pages in lol。 just like oomph, i loved how i could envision the characters。 overall this was extremely adorable! 13。 say everything 2/5 // i don't hate this story。 it just felt。。。really confusing。 like, the entire read-through, i was confused。 what is with her dad and his dad?? the journal thing was cute, i guess。 and the main character isn't the worst, she's just a little。。。lacking in character。 14。 the department of dead love 1/5 // i have seen many people rave about this one。 i am so sorry。 i do not like it。 it was confusing, the main character was not my favourite, and i ACTUALLY DID see the romance from a mile away with this one。 this was another story that would be much better as a full book。 WELL THERE YA HAVE IT, FOLKS。 my lovely adaptation of each and every short story in this book!! all in all, i really do love this。 it's one of my new favourite books!! also, props to the cover artist。 you are my new favourite person!! 。。。more

'Meet Cute' illustrates the little bright spark you find in someone, in that precise moment when you need it or is destined to be。 This is a compilation of beautiful fiction where normal people find fantasy in their own lives。 Just when you are getting to know your characters and begin to feel the spark; the story ends。 This left me longing for what's next but also unprepared to start the next tale on account of my unclosed connection with the previous characters。 At first I was just trying to d 'Meet Cute' illustrates the little bright spark you find in someone, in that precise moment when you need it or is destined to be。 This is a compilation of beautiful fiction where normal people find fantasy in their own lives。 Just when you are getting to know your characters and begin to feel the spark; the story ends。 This left me longing for what's next but also unprepared to start the next tale on account of my unclosed connection with the previous characters。 At first I was just trying to decifer how this book works。 Between this and my personal taste of writing I ended up enjoying a few of these stories。 。。。more

Cutesy light read, would be good if you’re looking for something to pick up and read small sections rather than a whole book。 Only a handful made me want to keep reading and know what happened, hence 3 stars。
